One of the great spaghetti westerns of the zombie genre, Zombie takes us from New York harbor to the Carribean on the trail of a missing doctor who stumbled onto a zombie curse (or disease, to be more specific). There’s not a lot of exposition about what is actually going on or what caused it and you know what? I didn’t care. This isn’t high art, but it’s a well-paced, at times suspenseful, and scary flick. There’s no puppetmaster behind the scenes, we don’t know what the zombies want and – perhaps best of all – we’re not even sure the zombies are even coming until it’s too late. If all of that fails to hook you, there’s the added bonus of a zombie fighting a freaking shark! The gore effects are passable (borderline good considering the film was made in 1979), the zombie effects are very good and the score is expertly done and moody as hell. 30 years later, this is still one of the standout zombie films.
