Tokyo Gore Police isn’t high art, but it’s certainly entertaining for fans of Troma films and the like. Ruka is a deeply troubled, katana-wielding member of Tokyo’s privatized police force, dedicated to fighting The Engineers – mysterious mutant serial killers whose wounds regenerate into lethal weapons. Sound ridiculous? It is!
The gore, action and characters are completely over the top and you’re often just as likely to laugh out loud as you are to be shocked. The good news is that those involved with making the film knew exactly what they wanted to do and exactly how seriously to NOT take themselves. The dialog is bad (and whoever did the subtitles must have been watching a different movie altogether), the effects are cheesy and the storyline (yes, there IS one) gets muddy at the end, but this is a film about maniac cops who shoot first and ask questions later taking on chainsaw wielding serial killer mutants, so those considerations are somewhat secondary. Not a film for the faint of heart or the easily offended, it’s a definite treat for those who can watch it for what it is.
