Shaolin Soccer

Shaolin Soccer (2001)

Let’s be perfectly clear: this movie is ridiculous.  I checked it out because somebody once presented it as one of the worst movies they ever saw.  That person obviously missed the point because this movie is brilliant in its idiocy.

Man Tat Ng is Golden Leg, a down on his luck former soccer star who has lost his way until he meets Mighty Steel Leg (Stephen Chow), a self-proclaimed kung fu master who is looking for a way to open the eyes of the masses to the glory of shaolin kung fu.  A comedy of circumstances eventually lead the two to realize that shaolin kung fu could be used to form an unstoppable soccer team – one that would amaze the world!

Mighty Steel Leg calls upon his shaolin brothers, who have all left kung fu behind them and succumbed to the banality of their lives until he convinces him that they could be great again.  Together, they challenge Team Evil for the soccer championship.

The performances are all perfect and the effects are actually quite good considering this is a low-brow sports comedy.  I began the film with a sense of dread, which quickly turned into a sense of “WTF” incredulity and finally, wide-eyed, slack-jawed amazement.  This was a pleasant surprise and a treat.

Stars: 4.5/5
