This is one of those movies that just shows how great the 80s were. Four couples maneuver their way into a mall for some after hours partying only to be set upon by the mall’s new robot security force.
If that sounds ridiculous it is – but so is the fact that the mechanized mall cops come equipped with lasers, are nearly indestructible and turn homicidal after lightning strikes the mall, scrambling the computer controlling mall security. The good news is that our band of horny co-eds has apparently had some decent training in explosives and building booby traps.
Absurd and as relentless as the killbots themselves, Chopping Mall is one of those goofy movies that could have only been made in the 80s. It’s so perfectly dated, though, that it works on nearly every level. Some fleeting sexuality makes it questionable for the kids, but beyond that it’s one of those movies that pretty much anybody can sit down, chuckle at and enjoy.
As the robots tell each of their victims: Thank you, have a nice day.
