The Human Centipede: First Sequence

The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009)

“The Human Centipede” is a masterpiece in overstatement.  The director wanted to make the most shocking film ever and really tried to make something disgusting.  That’s about all he managed to do, though.  There is no message here and even the storyline (even if viewed through the tiny view of the film) makes no sense.  This is shock for shock’s sake – and other films have been far more shocking.

“Cannibal Holocaust” had an underlying message and was far more vile and shocking.  The “Saw” movies (at least before they got completely played out) were more brutal but had a savage sort of reason to them.  Even the “Hostel” films heaped on the brutality after lulling you in, so they got a good shock out of the viewer.  This film had none of that.  It had a world renowned surgeon whose knowledge of human physiology is less extensive than mine, two of the worst cops ever, one or two useless walk-on characters and giant gaping plot holes.  And for what?  So the mad doctor can create some sort of freak just to prove to himself he can?  The most shocking part of the film was arguably a slide show!  We get glimpses of the procedure and then BAM, human centipede in the living room.  The ending was also completely unsatisfying, but with as bad as the middle was, who cares?

I didn’t find “The Human Centipede” as shocking, disturbing or disgusting as people make it out to be.  That said, I’m not particularly glad that I found it at all.

Stars: 1.5/5
